GENERAL SUMMARY\:

Assumes responsibility andaccountability for assigned patients. Provides professional nursing care to these patients incorporating thenursing process, the environment, technical equipment, and health caremembers.  Provides patient careactivities to patients of diverse ages.


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS\:

·        Administers nursing care to patients; includesassessment, planning, implementing, and evaluating the patient’s care plan incoordination with the physician.

·        Provides patient/family or caregiver educationand counseling in recognition and solution of physical, emotional, andenvironmental health problems.

·        Supervises health care members (i.e., licensedpractical nurses, patient care technicians, etc.) with patients.

·        Utilizescomputer applications and communication technologies appropriate to the worksetting to enter, retrieve, and analyze information and to facilitatecommunication and education.

·        When assigned to charge, makes patientassignments; triages patients; and problem solves with staff, physicians,patients, families, and ancillary departments.

·        Maintains knowledge of documentationrequirements needed for patients’ records.

·        Works independently with limited directsupervision using the Nurse Practice Act, Mercy  Medical Centerpolices, nursing standards, and professional judgement.

·        Maintains knowledge of equipment set-up,maintenance, and use (i.e., IV pumps, monitoring equipment, drainage devices).  Utilizes safeguards such as IV pump druglibrary and monitor alarms whenever available to maximize patient safety.

·        Works rotating shifts, weekends, and holidays asscheduled.

·        Initiates emergency support measures (i.e.,cardiopulmonary resuscitation, protecting patient from injury).

·        Takes assigned call as defined in unit policy.

 

MARGINAL FUNCTIONS\:

·        Assists with patient care duties/tasks (i.e.,emptying drainage devices, ambulating, hygiene.

·        Assists with clerical duties (i.e., maintenanceof chart, patient record, answering phones and call lights, processing physicianorders).

·        Maintains patient care supplies, equipment, andenvironment.

·        Provides orientation/education for staff,students, and other hospital and community organizations as requested.

·        Effectively assumes job responsibilities ofancillary support during absence. 

Qualification:

MINIMUM KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED\:

·         Possession of a current or compact state license as a registered nurse issued/defined by the State of Iowa. 

·         BSN preferred.

·         Proof of completion of Mandatory Reporter – Child and/or Dependent Adult Abuse training within three (3) months of hire.

·         BLS certified by the end of the orientation period (approximately six (6) weeks).
