POSITION PURPOSE\:

 

Thisposition contributes to the mission and vision of Alegent Health by providingdirect and indirect nursing care to a designated group of patients across theage continuum.  Provides services whichencompass the spiritual, physiological, social, and psychological aspects ofcare of the sick, prevention of disease, or conservation of health.

 

ENVIRONMENT\:

 

Alegent Health is anot-for-profit umbrella corporation providing governance, administrativemanagement and direction to all operations of Bergan Mercy Health System(sponsored by Catholic Health Initiatives) and Immanuel Medical Center (Immanuel HealthSystems).  These two health systems haveconsolidated operations while maintaining separate religious identities,financial assets and medical staffs.

 

Consolidated operations includefive acute-care metropolitan hospitals located in the Omaha-Council Bluffsmetropolitan area; three rural hospitals located in Missouri Valley andCorning, Iowa and in Schuyler, Nebraska; one long-term care facility located inOmaha; one ambulatory service facility at Lakeside in Omaha; minority owner ofcommunity hospital in Blair; home care programs serving the region; multiplemetropolitan and rural health care clinics/offices; major programmaticinitiatives in managed care, physical medicine and rehabilitation, behavioralhealth, senior services, cardiovascular services, orthopedics, women’s andchildren’s services, and oncology; and joint ventures with community partnersin pediatrics and hospice.

 

NATURE AND SCOPE\:

 

Theincumbent reports directly to the Operations Director and/or Manager, NursingService Administration and works collaboratively with patients, families,physicians, other departments and health care entities.


PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBILITIES\:

 

 1.        Assessespatient status with patient/family input and identifies age-appropriate patientcare needs/problems that includes bio-physical, psycho-social, spiritual,environment, self-care, and educational needs and will serve to focus theprovision of nursing care at admission, transfer, and discharge.

 

2.        Plans individualized age appropriateevidence-based patient care through a interdisciplinary team approach andthrough interdisciplinary patient care conference, ongoing patient assessments,re-evaluation of patient problems or needs.

 

3.         Utilizes professional skills andjudgement in prescribing, delegating and coordinating the plan of care;includes appropriate resources to manage patient care path/CareMaps/variances.Administers medications and treatments according to nursing policy.

 

 4.        Guidesand directs professional and nonprofessional personnel in the delivery ofpatient care, evaluates patient care effectiveness, modifies the plan of careaccording to age appropriate patient nursing policy. Utilizes carepaths/CareMaps to develop and modify the patient's plan of care. Monitors variancesand takes action on these variances.

 

 5.        Providesthe following nursing services\: a. Independent; b. Inter-dependent; c.  Delegated.

 

 6.        Identifiespatient/significant other learning needs and initiates and provides for ageappropriate education.

 

 7.        Respondsto patient calls, anticipates individual patient needs, and assures patientsafety and comfort through regular rounds, environmental maintenance, and otherappropriate safety measures.

 

 8.        Demonstratesthe ability to perform in an accurate and precise manner in crisis andemergency situations.  Demonstrateseffective management of rapidly changing situations.

 

 9.        Establishesand maintains interpersonal relationships with patients, visitors, and otherteam members while assuring confidentiality of patient information. 

 

10.       Maintains and promotes a professionalattitude by providing support and assisting co-workers and other team membersin the delivery of patient care.

 

11.       Demonstrates a cost effective awarenessby careful, efficient, and non-wasteful use of supplies and linens; usesestablished charge procedures and implementation of systems.

 

12.       Complies with internal and externalregulations, policies and procedures. 

 

 

 

 

13.       Assumes responsibility for personal andprofessional growth through participation in unit meetings, inservice programs,continuing education programs, and fulfills yearly requirements as stated bypolicy. Participates in achieving nursing division goals and supports SharedLeadership structure.  Assists in the orientationof new staff and participates in unit Quality Improvement activities.  Participates in achieving organizationalgoals.

 

14.       Assumes charge/leadershipresponsibilities based on skill level and unit needs.  As a charge nurse, the incumbent assumes leadershiprole for the shift to include the following duties\: serves as a resource forpatient care, assigns staffing for shift, makes recommendations to manager ifdisciplinary actions are needed, and complies with all regulations.

 

15.             Participates in all safety, security and infectioncontrol programs that are mandatory as well as those required and provided bythe department.

 

16.             Complies with internal and external regulations,policies, and procedures.  Participatesin achieving nursing division goals and supports shared governancestructure. 

 

17.           Acknowledges thevalue of multicultural traditions and demonstrates this when caring for  clients.

 

18.           Appropriatelydelegates nursing procedures which do not require the skill/knowledge orjudgement of a licensed professional and which may be safely delegated inaccordance with nursing policies and procedures.  Supervises the provision of care bynon-licensed personnel as necessary.

 

19.      Contributes to planning for use ofphysical, human, and capital budget fiscal resources.

 

20.           Demonstrateswork practices consistent with Alegent Health and department-specificsafety,  security and infection controlpolicies.

 

21.       Assess patient’s pain and establishes anacceptable pain level. Responds and intervenes to verbal and non-verbal pain.

 

22.       Authorized to make entries in the medicalrecord, consistent with and limited to the scope of the job duties and anyapplicable licensure.

 

23.       Must have ability to work effectively andcollaboratively in a diverse and multi-cultural environment.

Qualification:

QUALIFICATIONS\:

 

Experience

 

One-yearexperience in an area of specialty preferred.

 

Education/Licensure

Required\:   

Completionof a Registered Nurse program in an accredited institution

CurrentRN licensure in the State of Nebraska or theState of Iowa.  Nebraska andIowa arecompact     states so you must belicensed in the state of residence.

 

Additionalrequirements include\:

BLS or BLS instructor certification is required upon hire. 

Acceptable credentialing bodies and certifications includethe following\:  American Red Cross\:  CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer, AmericanSafety and Health Institute\:  CPR, PRO,must say “Professional Level-with AEDâ€, and American Heart Association\:  Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers. 

 

ACLS or ACLS instructor certification is required within 6months.  Acceptable credentialing bodiesand certifications include the following\: American Heart Association\: Advanced Cardiac Life Support, American Safety and HealthInstitute\:  ACLS, AmericanCollege of Surgeons\:  ATLS (Advanced Trauma Life Support) andAmerican College of Emergency Physician\:  ACLS

 

PALS(Pediatric Cardiac Life Support) or PALS instructor certification required within12 months.  Acceptable credentialingbodies and certifications include the following\:  American Heart Association\:  Pediatric Advanced Life Support, AmericanSafety and Health Institute\:  PALS,Emergency Nurses Association\:  EmergencyNursing Pediatric Course (ENPC), American Academy ofPediatrics\:  Pediatric Education forPrehospital Professionals (PEPP), and American Academy of Pediatrics/AmericanCollege of Emergency Physicians\:  APLS.

 

 

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities

 

Jobrequires continuous use of reading skills and verbal communication skills.  Job requires frequent use of writtencommunications skills.  Job requiresdelegation, conflict resolution, individual and group interactions, timemanagement, critical thinking and stress management. Incumbents must possessknowledge of how to provide care to a diverse population of patients and theability to communicate and work with people from a variety of age-groups,social strata and ethnic backgrounds.
