GENERAL SUMMARY

In this lead coder role with emphasis on Plastic Surgery primarily, and on other surgery specialties secondarily, the Surgical Coding Specialist analyzes medical records to determine diagnoses and procedures. Independently codes records accurately and performs DRG optimization at an advanced level. Abstracts clinical data from medical records for statistical and research purposes.

EDUCATION: Associate's degree or higher level degree or equivalent training in health information management or related field is required.

Required Certification, Registration, and/or Licensure: CPC, RHIA, RHIT, CCS or equivalent credential is preferred .

EXPERIENCE: From 5 to 10 years coding experience is required with at least one year of surgery coding experience ((e.g., plastic, orthopedic, dermatology, general): knowledge and e xperience in medical terminology and medical records work including experience and proficiency in inpatient level ICD-10 and CPT Coding, as well as CPT and HCPCS outpatient coding. Previous surgery coding experience and familiarity with medical terminology: Understanding of Medicare's global post-operative period and its application.
