Description:
JOB SUMMARY\:
    1. Will provide care for patients including neonate, pediatric, adolescent, adult and geriatric patients with various types of illness or trauma requiring emergency attention and must be able to recognize and effectively treat life-threatening conditions.
    2. Will deliver care to patients utilizing the nursing process of assessment, planning, intervention, implementation, and evaluation, in accordance with established nursing philosophy.
    3. Assumes responsibility and accountability for the care of all emergency patients with any type of injury or illness who presents to the emergency department for care regardless of age, race, social status or ability to pay.
    4. Each patient presenting to the Emergency Department is assessed by the Emergency Department Registered Nurse utilizing the Emergency Severity Index (ESI) triage system on every patient who presents for care. Assumes or delegates care for the patient according to the severity of illness or injury.
    5. Assists the emergency department physician with procedures as needed.

Incumbent has access to restricted or confidential patient information and must comply with the terms of Mercy Medical Center Security Policies as it applies to their job role. 
 
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS\:
  1. Performs triage, while considering both physical and psychosocial elements.
  2. Manages basic/advanced life support needs and stabilizes patients based upon nursing standards, Basic Life Support, Advance Cardiac Life Support, Trauma Nursing Core Course and approved protocols.
  3. Initiates corrective action whenever information from monitoring equipment shows adverse symptomatology.
  4. Records patients’ current vital signs and reports any adverse changes or critical findings to the Emergency Department physician.
  5. Works directly under physicians, assisting them during exams, diagnostic testing and treatments.
  6. Prepares and administers medications (orally, subcutaneously, intraveneously) as ordered by the Emergency Department physician and records the administration in the patient’s Electronic Health Record (EHR).
  7. Reports adverse reactions to medications or treatments.
  8. Cleans and bandages wounds as directed.
  9. Provides basic, bedside care.
  10. Maintains proper supplies and maintains knowledge of equipment set-up, operation and maintenance needed to care for patients.
  11. Reports any suspected abuse to the appropriate agencies.
  12. Utilizes nursing process which includes patient assessment, nursing diagnosis, and evaluation of patient status with accurate documentation in the EHR.
  13. Initiates patient education plan, as prescribed by physician. Teaches patients and significant others how to manage their illness/injury, by explaining\: post-treatment home care needs, diet/nutrition/exercise programs, self-administration of medication and rehabilitation.
  14. Displays professionalism while completing multiple urgent tasks in a timely manner.
  15. Records all care information concisely, accurately and completely, in a timely manner, in the appropriate portion of the EHR.
  16. Maintains patient confidentiality and retains a positive, friendly and courteous attitude to all patients.
 
MARGINAL FUNCTIONS\:
  1. Secures authorization signatures of patients on the appropriate record.
  2. Cleans examination rooms between patients and washes instruments as needed.
  3. Transports, ambulates, and transfers patients as needed.
Qualification:
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE\:
  1. Current Iowa Registered Nurse license.
  2. BLS and ACLS required.
  3. PALS encouraged at hire and required within one year of hire.
  4. TNCC encouraged at hire and required within one year of hire.
  5. Obtains CEU’s required for licensed renewal.
  6. Experience in emergency or critical care nursing desired.
