GENERAL SUMMARY:

Performstests and procedures in assigned sections, including those which requireexercise of independent judgment and responsibility with minimumsupervision. Independently performsqualitative and quantitative tests, following established guidelines andpredetermined criteria. Identifies problemsthat may adversely affect test performance and/or results and uses knowledge,critical thinking skills, and judgment to troubleshoot and resolve them. May be assigned to assume the duties of acharge technologist.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

* Performscomplex laboratory procedures utilized for the diagnosis and treatment ofdisease as appropriate for patient age to include neonates, infants, children,adolescents, adults, and geriatric adults; recognizes deviation from expectedresults; analyzes and corrects problems using scientific principles.

* Analyzesquality control data, makes judgments concerning the results, and takesappropriate action to maintain test accuracy and precision.

* Assistsand supports quality management systems and performance improvement initiatives.Utilizes LEAN principles/productivity standards.

* Performspreventive maintenance and basic troubleshooting of instrumentation andequipment.

* Worksindependently, organizing work to meet established deadlines and records.

* Performsnew instrument or procedure implementation and training.

* Maintainssupply inventories.

* Trainsnew employees and acts as a preceptor for medical laboratory science students.

* Operateslaboratory information systems, personal computers, and instrument-relatedcomputer software.

MARGINAL FUNCTIONS:

* Serveson hospital and laboratory committees as requested by supervisor/manager.

* Performssupervisory functions as delegated by supervisor/manager.

* Acts as technical resource for the client services andspecimen processing areas.

* Providesassistance to other laboratory team members.

MINIMUM KNOWLEDGE,SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:

* Bachelor'sdegree in Medical Technology or in Chemistry, Biology or related field.

* One-year clinicalinternship in a National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Science(NAACLS) accredited clinical laboratory science program or approvedalternate career path that meets certification eligibility requirements.

* Certification in oneof the following:

* Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) or MedicalTechnologist (MT) by the American Societyof Clinical Pathologists (ASCP)

* MedicalTechnologist (MT) by the American Medical Technologists (AMT)

* MedicalTechnologist (MT) by the American Association of Bioanalysts (AAB).

* Aperson may be hired into this position if he/she has completed the educational requirementsand is eligible for the certification exam. The exam must be successfullycompleted within six (6) months of hire.
