GENERAL SUMMARY:

Provides leadership to second shift resident counseling staff in absence of the Adult Programs Assistant. Provides direct care services to adult residents and their children. Participates in teaching, coaching, and directing adult women (residential and outpatient) on self-sufficiency and parenting. Works with residents on treatment plan goals through professional interventions and supportive assistance. Interacts with residents and staff to develop resident skills and insure safety and security. Communicates with supervisor to insure that programming is therapeutic, effective and efficiently provided. Insures that all necessary tasks are completed in a qualitative and timely manner.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

* Responsible for the timely development and distribution of the direct care staff work schedule assuring the availability of required staff for each shift and adherence to HOM staffing protocols. Provides coverage for absent staff.

* Assures that the resident counselors follow through with their direct care responsibilities emphasizing the provision of skill development education and coaching, development of rapport and relationship with residents, monitoring of resident activities, development of resident parenting skills, and monitoring of resident peer interactions. Intervenes when behaviors are inappropriate to ensure a safe environment.

* Serves as the initial contact person for addressing and resolving second shift staff questions and concerns.

* Monitors and assures resident counselor compliance with documentation requirements including daily logging of resident behaviors and activities, maintenance of medication records, completion of incident reports, staff communication logs, etc.

* Facilitates the changeover process to ensure effective communication of resident, program, and staff information between shifts.

* Assures that significant incidents are properly documented and passed on to Primary Counselors and/or supervisor.

* Assures medications are kept in a secured environment and appropriately distributed to adult residents and their children according to physician instructions. Assumes accountability for medication cupboard, including discarding outdated medications, updating documentation in medication log, and properly disposing of medications as warranted. Completes significant incident reports on medications taken improperly or not disposed. Assists and teaches residents appropriate administration of medications to themselves and their children.

* Responsible for the oversight of adult residents in their living unit, monitoring behavior, parenting skills, completion of chores and tasks.

* Provides hands-on counseling to adult residents in areas of problem solving, decision-making, conflict resolution, bedtime routines, and medication.

* Coordinates and provides transportation services to adults for school, professional appointments, recreational activities, and other requested trips when necessary; teaches adults to use public transportation when appropriate.

* Oversees the scheduling of resident professional appointments (i.e., doctor, dentist, and therapist) to insure that appointments are attended and arrived at on time.

* Maintains case files on adults by filing documents in proper order and checking medication logging.

* Provides for a safe, secure, and structured environment that facilitates personal growth and retraining of needed skills.

* Communicates regularly with Program Assistant to discuss daily operations, concerns, opportunities for improvement, and disciplinary issues of staff and residents.

MARGINAL FUNCTIONS:

* Facilitates and/or co-facilitates groups which educate adults on identified needs such as living skills, communications, parenting, etc. as assigned by the Program Assistant.

* Keeps accurate records of supplies and initiates purchase orders to replenish as needed.

* Teaches adults improved money management by working with them on planning and budgeting for purchases.

* Provides appropriate recreational activities that will meet physical well-being needs of the adults and their children and will broaden their experience of healthy, appropriate recreational activities.

* Participates in short-term and on-going task forces for the betterment of House of Mercy and program specific committees.

* Responds in emergency situations utilizing CPR and First Aid as appropriate and remains calm in handling the emergency situation.

* Facilitates resident move outs and discharges, including overseeing packing, cleaning and other check-out procedures. If resident belongings are left behind, packs and assists in storage of these items.

* Maintains an awareness of and adheres to mandatory child abuse reporting laws.

* Maintains an awareness of and adheres to Federal confidentiality laws.

* Maintains communications, on a professional level, with all co-workers, department staff, vendors, donors, and residents.

* Attends meetings and training sessions as required.

MINIMUM KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITY REQUIRED:

* A high school diploma or GED and two years full-time equivalent experience in human services related field required. (Sixty credit hours toward degree in social work or related human service field may be substituted for the one-year of required experience.) Supervisory experience preferred.

* AA or Bachelors degree in human services related field preferred.

* Valid First Aid and Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certification required within three months of hire.

* Valid Iowa Driver's/Chauffeurs License required, with accident free driving record for last three years and at least 18 years of age.

* Proof of current personal automobile insurance as required by Iowa law.

* Complete a one-hour Safe Driving Course within six (6) months of hire and complete a Safe Driving Review course every three years as provided by Mercy Medical Center.

* Valid Iowa Chauffeurs License required within one month of hire

* Medication Management certification to be completed within three months of hire.

* Mandatory Child Abuse Reporting training to be completed within one month of hire.

* Domestic Violence and Parenting training to be completed within six months of hire.
