Job Summary:
Embed, cuts, stains and mounts specimens of human tissue following established policies and standards.
Principal Accountabilities:
* Orients and embeds various tissue types according to embedding procedures and special instructions
* Prepares high quality tissue slides according to procedures
* Maintains integrity of specimens throughout the histological process of routine, special stain, and immunoperoxidase staining. Uses appropriate controls.
* Operates and maintains automatic H & E stainer and cover slipper according to written guidelines. Trouble shoot staining and coverslipping problems.
* Performs manual and automated special stains and immunoperoxidase stains using appropriate control slides to exhibit staining characteristics as defined in written procedures.
Troubleshoots abnormal staining and stainer operational issues
Prepares reagents and solutions with received date, opened date, and expiration date. Prepares reagent or solution for disposal at expiration date.
Notifies supervisor or QA to schedule for disposal pick up
* Retrieves slides and tissue blocks according to laboratory guidelines.
Operates and set up protocols for the processors.
REQUIRED:
Associates Degree or Equivalent Ed/Ex
Certified Histotechnologist, preferred
ASCP Histotechnician or Histotechnologists highly desirable or previous laboratory experience in routine histological procedures, including processing embedding, microtomy, routine H&E staining, special stain, IHC stain, coverslipping; must be eligible for ASCP Histotechnician; knowledge of Power Path system
Knowledge of Power Path or other A/P software system
Knowledge of Anatomy
Knowledge of proper embedment of tissue
Knowledge of basic chemical reactions for appropriate staining of tissue and ability to troubleshoot staining issues
Knowledge of basic mathematical problems to prepare solutions
