JOB PURPOSE:

Provide work direction to store staff and courteous assistance to customers by handling sales transactions, ensuring products are priced correctly and maintaining store inventory.

KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE:

  • High school diploma or GED is required, combined with a minimum of one year of satisfactory performance as an Assistant Manager and/or previous retail experience are required.  External candidates with a high school diploma and previous relevant supervisory experience will be given consideration.
  • Demonstrated leadership and problem solving skills are necessary.
  • Basic math skills are necessary in order to calculate change, volume sales, and tax percentages and balance cash registers.
  • Must be able to read and apply company procedure documents.
  • Good interpersonal skills are necessary in order to greet customers and provide information in an accurate and courteous manner, and to provide coaching and work direction to Customer Service Associates.
  • Must be able to work in a team environment.
  • Must be able to handle multiple tasks accurately and courteously. Must be able to monitor activity both within the store and at gas pumps.
  • Must be able to complete company-sponsored training and required updates within specified training periods.
  • Computer literacy is required. The ability to use company software for operations, Human Resource applications as well as the Microsoft Office applications within a reasonable training period is necessary.
  • Must be able to work any shift and/or any day in order to coordinate schedules with the Store Manager.
  • Must have reliable personal transportation in order to complete banking responsibilities and other off-site business activities as required.
  • Physical Requirements: Requires ability to lift up to fifty (50) pounds throughout a normal shift, moving and stacking merchandise, cleaning, sweeping, shoveling snow, and being able to stoop, bend, and stand for extended periods of time.  Must be able to work inside coolers to maintain inventory.  The ability to ascend and descend a five-foot ladder safely is necessary. The incumbent must be able to read alpha and numeric data on cash registers and procedure documents.

MAJOR DUTIES:

  1. Customer Service: Greets customers and responds to inquiries in a courteous manner. Provides assistance or answers questions as needed.
  2. Sales: Receives financial payments, counts back change as necessary. Operates cash register, credit card scanners, lottery ticket machines and other equipment to complete sales transactions. Monitors activity at gas pumps, ensuring customers are able to dispense fuel safely and financial transactions are handled correctly.
  3. Work Direction and Team Leadership: Provides work direction to Customer Service Associates during the assigned shift. Ensures that store areas are cleaned and stocked. Provides direction in resolving customer problems or complaints. Provides feedback to Associates and the Store Manager on performance. Fills in for the Store Manager as needed, supervising staff and taking calls in the absence of the Manager
  4. Store Maintenance: Stocks shelves, coolers and freezers. Ensures supplies such as coffee, soda, syrup and cups are replenished in vending areas. Maintains stock areas. Cleans interior of store, including monitoring and correcting hazards such as spills or slip/fall hazards in aisles. Maintains exterior of store including emptying trash or shoveling snow. May update exterior signage such as gas price boards and promotion posters. Sort bottle returns.
  5. Compliance: Ensures that sales of beer, spirits, tobacco products and lottery tickets comply with state and federal age requirements.
  6. Cash Handling and Daily Paperwork: Follows company procedures to deposit receipts in safes and balance cash registers. Balances daily receipts in PDI.  Prepares and records bank deposits, and delivers deposits to the designated bank.
  7. Safety Captain: Serves as the store’s Safety Captain. Does safety audits and makes sure employees follow safety procedures. Leads safety meetings, presenting corporate safety topics appropriately.
  8. Ensures smooth store operations by assisting the Store Manager at his/her direction.
