Shift: 6:45am - 7:15pm, includes every other weekend

Job Summary:

Under the direction of the Emergency Department Nursing Director, the Emergency Department RN performs duties by applying professional nursing theory and principles, and utilizes the nursing process to assess, plan, implement, and evaluate care given to patients in the ED. Works collaboratively with the interdisciplinary health care team in providing patient care. Demonstrates clinical, organizational, and communication skills in dealing with patients, families, and other health care workers.

Essential Duties Include the Following:

Observes, collects and records data related to patient's biophysical, psychosocial, environmental and self-care ability, as well as educational and discharge planning needs as indicated.

Analyzes assessment findings and test results to provide the basis for planning timely and effective nursing interventions.

Implements an age-appropriate plan of care in conjunction with the physician, the patient, the patient's family and/or significant others, and other members of the interdisciplinary health care team.

Documents and utilizes patient data to measure progress toward attainment of patient outcomes and patient goals.

Documents the care given in a complete and timely manner.

Provides specialized nursing care to patients in the Emergency Department.

Effectively manages & utilizes sophisticated equipment associated with ED care.

Accurately assigns triage category.

Reassess patients in waiting area based on triage acuity guidelines and re-categorizes them as appropriate.

Demonstrates knowledge of cardiac monitoring; identifies dysrhythmias and treats appropriately.

Monitors hemodynamic status of patient and correctly interpret the results.

Anticipates and acts quickly in emergency patient care situations.

Utilizes ACLS, PALS, TNCC/TEAM protocol as indicated.

Communicates significant data to appropriate persons throughout the patient's emergency care experience; communicates pertinent information to family/significant others as appropriate.

Identifies the learning needs of the patient and/or significant others, and initiates measures to meet those needs within the patient's assessed learning abilities by incorporating the patients' individual social, emotional and cultural needs into the planning and teaching process.

Involves patient and significant others in education and decision-making processes related to the patient's care.

Completes documentation related to teaching intervention.

Administers medications according to hospital policies/procedure to ensure patient safety. Follows safe medication administration practices using the 5 R's: Right Medication, Right Patient, Right Dose, Right Route, and Right Time.

Provides for and follows precautions to ensure patient safety related to fall prevention.

Ensures that equipment is available, in proper place, and maintained in a working condition.

Utilizes safety equipment according to hospital policies to ensure own and co-workers' safety needs.

Demonstrates knowledge and compliance with practices that protect the health care provider and reduces the spread of infection in the emergency care setting.

Demonstrates knowledge and skills necessary to implement the protocol to be followed in the event of an internal or external disaster or threat

Provides direction to other team members of the nursing team to ensure that patient care needs are met in a safe and knowledgeable manner.

Ensures that the delivery of patient care reflects efficient and effective utilization of resources (multidisciplinary).

Facilitates flow of patients through the emergency care system.

Upon patient release from the department, assists with cleaning the room by wiping the bed down, changing linens, emptying the trash, straightening furniture, and stocking the room with necessary supplies/equipment.

Transports patients to assigned units as appropriate.

Able to organize and prioritize patient care duties as assigned; demonstrates independent function and self-direction. Demonstrates efficiency with unit specific equipment.

Able to effectively care for psychiatric patients as evidenced by:

Works Collaboratively with ED staff, physicians and community agencies to develop care plan and disposition for the patient.

Interacts with Patients and significant others to gather information regarding the events precipitating the emergency psychiatric condition.

Gather histories of mental and physical disabilities, alcohol and drug use, past psychiatric treatment, and legal involvement and documents them on ED Crisis Evaluation Form in a timely, complete, and appropriate manner.

Assesses family, social, and work relationship; including resources available for services.

Provides crisis intervention and management.

Provides consultation and recommendations to the E.D. Physicians.

With the E.D. Physicians develops and implements a disposition plan.

Shows good knowledge of referral/placement process and available community resources.

Communicates effectively with families and agencies, conveying a positive professional image.

Demonstrated competence with patient de-escalation techniques, restraint and seclusion.

License/Certification:

Current RN license issued by the State of Oregon.

Must have current BLS upon hire.

Arrhythmia certification required within 3 months of hire.

ACLS required within 3 months of hire.

PALS required within 6 months of hire. After initial PALS certification, ENPC may be alternated with PALS.

TNCC within 1 year of date of hire. After initial TNCC certification, TEAM may be alternated with TNCC.

Experience:

Requires a minimum of 400 hours experience within the last 24 months in the ER or an RN with a minimum of 2 years prior ER experience within the last 5 years and have maintained TNCC, PALS and ACLS.

Education:

Graduate of an accredited school of nursing.
