GENERAL SUMMARY :
Performs tests and procedures in assigned sections(s),
including those which require exercise of independent judgment and
responsibility with minimum supervision.
Independently performs qualitative and quantitative tests, following
established guidelines and predetermined criteria. Identifies problems that may adversely affect
test performance and/or results and uses knowledge, critical thinking skills
and judgment to troubleshoot and resolve them.
May be assigned to assume the duties of a charge technologist.
ESSENTIAL
FUNCTIONS :
*
Performs complex laboratory procedures utilized
for the diagnosis and treatment of disease as appropriate for patient age to
include neonate, infant, child, adolescent, adult and geriatric adult;
recognizes deviation from expected results; analyzes and corrects problems
using scientific principles.
*
Follows established policies, procedures and standard
work.
*
Analyzes quality control data, makes judgments
concerning the results and takes appropriate action to maintain test accuracy
and precision.
*
Utilizes LEAN principles/productivity standards
*
Assists and supports quality management systems
and performance improvement initiatives
*
Performs preventive maintenance and basic
troubleshooting of instrumentation and equipment.
*
Works independently, organizing work to meet
established deadlines and records.
*
Performs new instrument or procedure
implementation and training.
*
Maintains supply inventories.
*
Trains new employees.
*
Acts as a preceptor for medical
laboratory science students.
*
Operates laboratory information systems,
personal computers, and instrument-related computer software.
*
Follows safe work practices.
*
Demonstrates the following customer
service/interpersonal skills:
*
Takes personal responsibility for work, actions
and attitudes
*
Respects patients, peers, clients, students,
physicians, service representatives, and other hospital staff
*
Demonstrates positive and effective
communication skills
*
Cooperates with peers and other hospital staff
to build and maintain an effective healthcare team.
MARGINAL FUNCTIONS :
*
Serves on hospital and laboratory committees as requested
by supervisor/manager.
*
Performs
supervisory functions as delegated by the supervisor or manager.
*
Acts as technical resource for the client services and
specimen processing areas.
*
Provides assistance to other laboratory team
members.
MINIMUM KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED :
* Bachelor's degree in Medical Technology or in Chemistry, Biology or related field with one-year clinical internship in a National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Science (NAACLS) accredited Clinical Laboratory Science program or approved alternate career path as designated in the Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments of 1988 (CLIA).
* Registration by the American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP) as a Medical Technologist or by the American Medical Technologists (AMT) as a medical technologist or categorical registration by either NCA or ASCP in one of the laboratory sciences is required.
* A person may be hired into this position if he/she has completed the requirements for registration but has not successfully completed the exam. However, the exam must be successfully completed within 6 months subsequent to hiring.
