Implements medically prescribed Radiation Therapy treatments and simulations under the supervision of a qualified physician. Able to digitize MLC and fabricate cerrobend blocks according to the physician's prescription. Able to immobilize and simulate treatment areas along with aiding in some levels of treatment planning. Able to provide appropriate care of patients served, regardless of age. Able to provide on call coverage with in 60 minutes over weekends, holidays, and emergency after hour call as deemed necessary in order to maintain adequate level of departmental services. Will be required to work a flexible schedule according to patient volume.

- 1. Provides highest quality treatment consistent with physician prescription.
- 1.1 Functions under the direction of the Radiation Oncologist. Provides prescribed treatments completely and accurately. Understands and practices proper use of all equipment; never operating equipment inconsistent with manufacturers standards. Determines most suitable anatomical posture and positions. Understands contraindications and potential hazards of different treatments and/or treatment sites.
- 2. Reviews appropriate patient history,physician prescription,pathology report before administering treatments.
- 2.1 Interacts professionally at all times with patient and family. Assures privacy and confidentiality throughout course of treatment. Obtains patient history and evaluates pre-requisites for examination including consent and pathology reports. Ascertains patient understanding of process and informed consent. Assesses, evaluates and informs physician of changes in patient's condition during treatment course. Provides care appropriate to condition and age of the patient, including adult and geriatric populations.
- 3. Responsible for the safety of patients and staff.
- 3.1 Observes Radiation Therapy safety precautions at all times. Functions as gatekeeper to Linac suite at all times. Understands proper use of all equipment, never operating equipment inconsistent with manufacturer's standards. Responsible for proactive stance in 'near-miss' reporting. Completes incident/occurrence reports in a timely fashion. Actively participates in performance improvement activities related to patient and staff safety.
- 4. Contributes to the productivity and efficient operation of the department.
- 4.1 Completes assignments within a reasonable time frame with minimal errors. Reviews next day and makes necessary preparations. Exhibits punctuality and flexibility in schedule. Covers 'on-call' rotation in a responsible manner, responding on-site within sixty (60) minutes of contact. Maintains work area to promote efficient operation (i.e. assuring availability of stock supplies).
- 5. Participates in performance improvement, quality control and assurance functions.
- 5.1 Performs daily warm-up of equipment prior to first scheduled treatment. Performs all quality control checks. Maintains accurate quality control logs and equipment service records. Maintains contact with field service engineer to assure highest level of equipment function. At the request of supervisors, participates in quality assurance, performance improvement and CQI Team activities.
- 6. Identifies personal learning needs and opportunities for career growth.
- 6.1 Responsible for own learning needs and seeks educational opportunities to meet those needs. Attends inservice programs and outside workshops, seminars, training classes, and educational programs to keep current in technical developments in the field. Demonstrates this knowledge by contributing to improved service. Maintains current license requirements.
EDUCATION
Associates of Science preferred.
EXPERIENCE
One to two (1-2) years experience as a Radiation Therapist preferred. New graduates considered.
LICENSURE
ARRT registered therapist in good standing and has a current Connecticut State License.
SPECIAL SKILLS
Profficiant in computer usage. Knowlegable with Radiation Therapy equipment and treatment techniques.
PHYSICAL DEMAND
Standing and walking most of the day. Working on equipment with occasional lifting, pushing, and pulling of heavy objects. Intense concentration with computers and instruments. Must have the ability to hear and observe all the surroundings of the department and have manual dexterity. Assisting in lifting of patients with physical problems as well as exposure to patients with mental and emotional issues. Exposed to end of life conditions as well as death.
