About this job

Sterile Processing Technicians must have basic knowledge, possess technical skills, and demonstrate an understanding of the following areas: Decontamination, Transporting, Code Carts and Asset Management Tracking System. DUTIES & ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Working knowledge of all Sterile Processing instrumentation and supplies
  • Transports and decontaminates reusable instruments and equipment used for patient care
  • Disassemble, decontaminate, and prepare instruments for further processing
  • Accurately assembles basic instrument sets and procedure trays
  • Operate and maintain: washer/decontaminator, steam spray gun, ultrasonic machine, sterilizers, heat sealers, and other equipment and machinery required to complete a process
  • Package supplies according to specifications and appropriate methods of sterilization
  • Practice preventative maintenance on all instruments and patient care equipment by understanding and applying the principles of electrical and mechanical safety, and working with the bio-medical engineer to ensure equipment is safe and functioning properly
  • Under supervision, perform quality control on all sterilizers (i.e. biological, chemical, and mechanical monitoring) according to standards set by: JACHO, AORN, and AAMI
  • Dispense sterile supplies to the appropriate locations (i.e. Sterile Storage, OR, ER, LR, etc.)
  • Rotate trays and sets to assure proper sterility guidelines are followed
  • Maintain accurate instrument count sheet(s) of all surgical sets to be assembled
  • Participate in the daily cleaning of the department
  • Meet and maintain required productivity expectations
  • Perform other related duties as directed

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Can assess, identify, and respond to urgent requests for instruments, supplies, and equipment
  • Knowledge of, and able to stay compliant with applicable infection control, health, safety, and other policies and procedures
  • Able to operate fairly complex machines and equipment in the department
  • Able to acquire a thorough knowledge of aseptic technique principles and apply such principles when carrying various duties throughout the department
  • Able to differentiate between steam and sterrad supplies

  • High school or equivalent

Required experience:

  • Sterile Processing: 1 year

Required license or certification:

  • CRCST
